Nutritionally the astaxanthin or cantaxanthin feed does not differ from the normal comparable trout feed. Astaxanthin is a naturally carotenoide occurring in shellfish. Wild salmon take it in via their natural diet. Hence it is the carotenoide that has the entire colour and composition, as it is found in salmon caught wild. The use of astaxantin insures the breeder of an end product that neither differs in composition nor in colour from the natural product. Cantaxanthin is a carotenoid that is extremely close to astaxanthin in colour. The carotene itself is naturally identifiable but does not appear as a pigment in the animal kingdom. Cantaxanthin is a carotenoid that does naturally appear in certain plants. Cantaxanthin is often chosen, particularly for commercial reasons. Both carotenes can be used either purely or mixed together for the production of salmon trout.
